THE MAZE

These were taken on our recent week-long excursion into the MAZE district of Canyonlands National Park, outside of Moab, Utah, with good friends NE and DJ. Picture rugged abyssal canyons chiseled from Martianesque red sandstone, soaring rock architecture and perfect desert solitude. The Maze is by far the most remote section of the park, accessible only by boat or a day-long ride down a rutted and rocky (modified 4wd-only) trail. As you can see, we opted for the water access, a 50-60 mile jet-boat ride down the Colorado river. Although the boat required a STEEP hike out of the river basin (1200' in 1.2 miles), and 2 frigid 2.5-hour boat rides, it was really our only option. Unfortunately, being the desert and all, we had to pack in most of our water by jug and backpack adding an additional 150 lbs. or so to our collective burden. Worth it? Oh yeah...

After a few miles of hiking through the desert, we came to the MAZE threshold. Below this white-rim sandstone layer lies an elaborate labyrinth of canyons, and our luxury accomodations for the next week.

At the top of the pic, sitting atop the white-rim sandstone, are the "chocolate drops," some of the most prominent rock features in the Maze. They're actually just large sections of rock that have yet to erode, despite the geological carnage all around them.

This is the "Harvest Scene," supposedly Native American pictographs depicting the Harvest. Some say Native Americans; I say space aliens. I mean look at the striped one in the middle..what is that??

These three pics were taken from the base of the famous "chocolate drops." Amazingly, we managed to find a steep and broken (off-map) route up one of the canyon walls to stand at their base. Not a bad view back down into the MAZE.

We all climbed a rock wall about 40-50' to this ledge for the sunset. This canyon is adjacent to the only campsite we inhabited for more than one night.

Moutain Madness

Here are some shots from our trip to Denali National Park, Alaska this summer. I can't say too much about the trip that these pictures don't convey. Jessie, Allie and I had an incredible time. A day after we arrived in the park the clouds broke and a summer full of unseasonably nasty Alaskan weather graced us with a week of (mostly) sunshine. We spent six nights in the wilderness, traversed glaciers, forded raging rivers, hiked mountains, gained elusive passes, encountered the grizz, and saw some of the most amazing places on the planet. Just serves to reinforce the fact that Alaska is my favorite state, and Denali my favorite place in it.

Some icy puddles on the Muldrow. We spent approx. four days walking beside this massive glacier/icefield. The entire time we heard it rumble and crack as if it were alive. It left us with little doubt of its power and ability to shape landscape.

These are from a weeklong adventure in the Olympic mountains with good friends MDS, LC and BG. This trip kicked off a summer of "moutain madness;" not an easy trip by any stretch. Here are some recent (and some not so recent) pics. The first few are from last weekend, in the Colonel Bob National Wilderness Area on the Olympic Peninsula, a temperate rainforest with a substantial amount of old growth conifer.

Not much news to report. We've been enjoying some recent snow shoe trips into the forests and mountains. Here are some pics from various excursions over the past two months. On sunday we drove to Paradise on the south side of Rainier. Beautiful weather traveled with us.

Here are a few pics from our recent excursion into 'ze mountains. The day after Thanksgiving we were blessed with some beautiful weather, so we hopped in the car and drove about 2 hours to the Mt. Baker Snoqualimie National Forest. After two hours (and many curse words) of sweaty slippery snow drudging up the mountain, we were rewarded with these striking views and a few hours playing in the snow with Layla.

Here are some pics from the last few weeks. The two on the bottom are from a 105m. organized bike ride through central Oregon. The weather was okay for most of the ride, but the last 10m. or so it pissed and poured all over us. Needless to say, it provided some incentive not to drag behind. The ride was great nonetheless.
The other pics were shot from a ferry. Last weekend we rode from our house to downtown Seattle, hopped a ferry, rode around Bainbridge island and then back. It was a beautiful day, but much of our island ride was in the fog. In the close-up shot of downtown, you can see Allie's office building. It's one building over from the far right, the shorter, square grey building. Actually, it looks just like what it is, a federal building. She is on the 12th floor, with a window view, but on the other side.
The picture of the fountain and Mt. Ranier was taken from campus. It seems like they (whoever) oriented the campus layout to capture as many views as possible.

Here are some shots I took this morning. Nothing too special, the light wasn't that great and neither is the camera....oh, wait..neither is the photographer... hmmmm... Course, when you have such a beeeeautiful subject, I guess you can't really go wrong.. Anyhow, the big black fins in the top pic were chopped off naval subs and stuck in ground to resemble orca dorsals. They (the fins) are actually named after real orcas in local pods.. There is a small brass plate on the side of each fin with the name of the sub, and the (human assigned) name of the whale.... Not really sure if we could pronounce what they call each other.. yeeeeeewaaahahhhaaaamemeeeeeeeaahhaaaaa-I think it might sound something like that... but i'm still learning... whalespeak, that is....

September is blackberry pickin' season in Seattle. A walk down pretty much any trail, and most streets, can be a tasty endeavor. What amazes me is that there aren't more birds taking advantage of the buffet?! The other shot is the view out our kitchen window. Depending on the clouds, the mountains can be really beautiful..

Here is the official launch photo of our new blog. This is a picture of allie and layla enjoying the view of Mt Ranier from atop Bandera mtn. About 45 minutes outside Seattle, and right on I-90, this mountain rises to an elevation of around 5500 feet. Considering we began our day at sea level, it was quite the hike to the top! Of course the bottle of wine we packed with us to the top made the descent a bit easier!
